Click on "Get Gems", and there should be an option to 'earn' gems.
One does not simply get free gems.
I got beta and a good chunk of the items in the classic shop from doing free offers on SuperRewards. Of course, this was over a period of probably six months or so. Your patience may vary.
You don't, unless you want to do SuperRewards.
