Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Anonymous Avatars

For my forum game Team Attack, I made a bunch of symbols to represent the teams. Since then, I've made a bunch more. (I was bored/thought I might use them later)

I think they would be good to use as avatars for anonymous threads.

To give more options, you could have multiple colours like so:

Hidden text

If more are needed to give more permutations, they're not that hard to make, I can whip up some more.

Also if you guys like the idea, I can make them all separate images and send them to Diff or something.

Re: Anonymous Avatars

Or you cold leave them as one image. I guess that's a thing though.

Diff, I never did ask. What's the total number of different combos available in the username system? I feel like dozens of images plus colors won't be close, but notable. Then there's rotation, uh

Recap, diff was looking into this through some hash/image lib but would've required recompiling php (iirc)

Personally I'm up for this. These look 10 times better than those weird hash generated pictures... Cough

Edit: I don't think we can ever really come up with a perfect system to generate temporary avatars and still retain the impression legit avatars and signatures have. ... Unless we crowd source hundreds of odd photos!

theres around 100-150 nouns
and 100-150 adjectives
multiply one by another
then its also possible to separate the 2 words with - or _ or space, or not separate them at all, so multiply total amount of combos by 4,
then its also possible for the name to miss the adjective so add 150 more combinations
its also possible for the noun/adjective to be capitalised or not capitalised so multiply the amount of combos by 2 for noun and by 2 for adjective, total 4
the username might also have numbers in the name (up to 2 digits) so multiply it by 100
this whole thing is a huge approximation but according to my calculations the result is:
a lot

Re: Anonymous Avatars

I was hoping to compare orders of magnitude. Keep in mind not all adjectives pair with all nouns, and capitalization and separation don't really differentiate noticeably. They're more trivial

Re: Anonymous Avatars

Really hard to say. All nouns can technically pair with all adjectives, but it's a lot less likely. Not all usernames are created equal.

Re: Anonymous Avatars

Your numbers, 16 million. Reasonable.

60 images, 10 colors, 4 rotations?
Just 2400. Considerably smaller. If we tile 2x2, it's 33177600000000 I think.

Thoughts?

I think tiling them would make them look odd, it'd remove the readability imo

Anyway I added 30 more images and came up with 30 colours that look good and are unique to each other.

90 x 30 x 4 = 10800

I think a 1 in 10000 chance is pretty unlikely to pose a problem

Re: Anonymous Avatars

Yeah tiling probably wouldn't do much good, except make the numbers nice and .. exceedingly large.

Plus, even though 1 in 10000 is egregiously more likely to have a collision than 16 million, the avatar certainly doesn't need to be unique. That's what the username is for.

looks like you have considerable support.

Re: Anonymous Avatars

Maybe the colored avatars should be set in OP for specified members as "teams"?

Re: Anonymous Avatars

I like this idea, but until I can get around to it (currently away from home) let's just go with randomly generated colors.

EDIT: Now with bonus random symbols.

Sweet, nice work! Would it be possible to get the source code on that?

Just don't make avatars that messy like in Koya's version, the Onjit's are a little messy but just right.

Yeah I kind of agree, the dirt could be toned back a bit. Also you could probably try playing around with different filters, maybe one that has a wood grain texture, maybe something with definite crack-looking lines, maybe dots or something.

Also shapes 31 and 55 are asymmetrical

Still great work though //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Trying out some other textures.

Sorted, I was loading the wrong versions of the images.

Thank you.
