I already have an alternate idea for those gray blocks, which could be useful but not overpowered, while at the same time making the game more dynamic.

Oh yeah sry I didn't mention that part. My apologies for the double post.
First and main idea is each gray cell gives you +1 point per turn, instead of a fixed one-time amount.
Another possibility is that for every 8 non-gray squares you own, you get +1 per turn too. This makes the game more dynamic.
The other idea was that capturing a gray cell would activate one powerup which would impact the map in some way:
1 point of your color appears randomly on an unoccupied square, potentially allowing for expanding on a new side of the map. 10 spawns it in a radius of 1 (a + shape), 25 spawns it in a radius of 2
Increase all your currently owned squares by 1 point. 10 gives a +2 increase, 25 gives a +1 increase affected by multiplier, with a minimum of 2 for each cell
Randomly make one of each opponent cell's disappear. Cannot target a base. 10 will target 2 squares, 25 targets the square with the biggest value.
Create a new base, requiring the opponents to take over all bases to capture you. 10 does nothing extra, 25 lets you choose where you want the new base.
Make you untargetable for until someone tries to attack you once with at least 1 point. 10 requires the opponent to spend 2 points on you, 25 requires 3 points
Allows you to redistribute all points present from one square, to other already owned squares. 10 lets you place up to 3 of them on new squares, 25 also lets you place them on any squares you are in contact with, but only for that turn. No keeping the points for later.
