To OP:
If you read the 2.0 update notes, you'd see that they intentionally did this so bots couldn't reward you for liking/favoriting.

What if this were client-sided (I think that term applies), meaning that only the player giving the like or favorite could see it?

Player already does see a star/heart pop up when he likes/favs
