Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

English / Native language

So I have been thinking about this for a long time so why not posting it on the forums?

I have been noticing that there are a lot of non-english speaking people playing everybody edits, they probably cannot understand a word of the update notes, nor signs, chat messages and the description of levels/campaigns.
You probably all once have seen something like 'polski' or 'espanol' in the names of levels, people just prefer to talk their own native language instead of their second, expecially at a young age.
So I propose that there should be some sort of ability for people that speak 2 or more languages fluently to translate the english text into a language other then english.
(with 'the text' I mean stuff like updates notes, the help page or the blog)

I am sure that there are a lot of people willing to help translation EE from english to their native language. And if that's not the case then you could give players that translate a little reward for their work, like some extra energy.

It is better than an automatically generated translation.

You get more people understanding the rules of EE.

It is more pleasant to play EE for somebody that does not have english as their native tongue.

I really hope that some sort of system will be implented, I remember how annoying it was not understanding the english of EE when I was younger. (I speak Dutch as my native language)
Let me know what you think! //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

This has been suggested before but I don't recall update notes being mentioned.
If not the game text (like Return to lobby, etc.) then the update notes would also be useful

I don't think the actual game should be translated, but maybe just the interactive tutorial and some small parts of update logs. That is the important ones.

Re: English / Native language

IMO people just being, well, forced to learn English would be better - that's something which will help them a lot in the future - but I'm up for translating to Brazilian Portuguese. I don't think translating all the in-game text would be thaat long (compared to, let's say, Mass Effect 3?) but I could be horribly wrong. The devs already rejected this anyway (@Zoey's post).

I have to say, I agree. Something like 'go to lobby' does not have to be translated per se, after trying it for 1 time you will understand that it brings you to the lobby.

Basically what you're saying is you want to force people to learn English because you're too lazy to add other languages to the game?

Don't tell me I'm wrong because that's exactly what's happening.

(By "you" I mean the devs)

It's a win/win.

But hey I guess learning one of the most important languages in the world is a bad thing. It's better to keep people who speak other languages isolated together with their fellow other speaking language friends. And we need more Polish/Brazilian levels in the lobby because we all love those.

But seriously though, with a master's degree in linguistics (I've had my share of sociolinguistics) as well as a master's degree in teaching on top of the fact that I've personally experienced what it's like to be immersed in different languages on the internet, I'm telling you, having the game be English only has many many advantages.

Having different language options creates different layers in the community causing less interaction between players and thus creating a less tightly-knit community in addition to stealing an immersive learning environment away from them.
Yes we get some forum posts or some messages in PM that are hard to understand sometimes, but I've seen plenty of people improve their English so much on EE, it's almost scary.

And as a bonus it saves us a ton of work.

The Updates Notes and the rules are important to translate, because apposed to (for instance) 'Go to lobby' you are mostly not reading them more than 1 or 2 times. Also, It is better that someone has read the rules before starting to play the actual game, so in that case there is no possibily to imerge into the english language by playing the game. I'll have to agree that english should always be the dominant language though.

There are enough people that are willing to help translating so it doesn't have to be a ton of work to do.

Re: English / Native language

I posted about this too, but was not implemented because EE should be considered a learning English device.

When profiding a native language version of the update notes next to an english version of it, you could actually really encourage people to learn english.

When there is no native language version, A lot of people would probably ignore the english version or understand barely anything of it when reading.
When there is a native language version then you are able to see the parallels between english and your native language, and you are also able to actually understand the important message.

Re: English / Native language

Right now, EE it too small to be able to afford this. If EE grows a lot bigger we may consider this.
Then I know some of you may want to translate voluntarily, but this means adding more people to the team and adding an additional deadline to an already tight schedule.

I'm not ruling it out completely, but as someone who has done translation work, do not underestimate the time it takes to translate stuff, let alone correctly.
