A Warning Against Phishing

First off:
DON'T EVER GIVE AWAY YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE! EVER!

It has recently come to our attention that there’s a lot of phishing going on. What’s phishing you ask? Simply put, someone tries to gain your trust to steal your sensitive information. In the case of Everybody Edits, people are pretending to be (secret) admins/mods and use some excuse to ask for your password. For example:

If you give away your password, they will steal your account and abuse it. So don’t do it! The staff will never, ever, ask for your passwords, so don’t give them out to anyone! Only on rare occasions will the staff ask for account information, such as an email address or time/proof of account purchases.

These are people trying to “hack” you. If someone sends you a PM like this, report them using the /report command with a link to the PM chat history. For anyone attempting this, this is a serious offence, you will be IP banned if you attempt this, and possibly have all your accounts deleted.

Also, there is no such thing as secret mods, so don’t listen to anyone saying they are. If you’re in doubt whether you’re talking to a staff member, the staff members’ name in-game will be yellow/gold or purple. Let's reiterate just in case you missed it:

DO NOT, FOR ANY REASON, GIVE YOUR PASSWORD TO SOMEBODY ELSE. DO NOT EVEN GIVE IT TO THE EVERYBODY EDITS STAFF.

IF YOU ARE CAUGHT TRYING TO PHISH ANOTHER PERSON'S ACCOUNT, YOU WILL BE IP BANNED.

How many nubs are going to know how to do that? Why not have a checkbox or popup dialog where you can actually fill out your report? You could have a checkbox to automagically include a copy of their chat log with the report. EE needs to move further away from commands.

It appears that once we made the warning against this, many other people it would be funny to do it themselves.

Whether you are doing it as a joke, or not... you will be banned. We will not hesitate to ban your IP, and delete your account if need-be. This is a very serious issue, and it's an extreme annoyance.

As for everyone else, thank you for sending in the reports. Please continue to report anyone doing this. However, be careful sending in reports that are fake. Doing so could backfire and get you banned.

Consider configuring the client/serverside to send a chat log with the report details - it's easier in the long run and will should prevent fake reports.
