The point of protection is to protect against hazards so to have something negate that seems counterintuitive. You can just use the cancel effect block for this instead
ok ok fine i'll stick with keys and an afk player for my timers in puzzles involving prot
and i'll use annoying portal/switch mechanisms near portals so that you can die "with prot" for puzzles

as everyone mentioned portection PROTECTS you so you hsoudlt be able to die with it

You could say this about any hazard. If protection protected against every hazard but spikes, there'd be some uses there as well, but protection is meant to protect, and so I think a more viable option would be to allow the ability to set what protection will protect against. It would default to universal protection, but you could disable spike, or fire, or zombie and waste together, and etc.
To make it known what you have protection against, small icons could appear beside the protection icon at the top left.

I agree with this.
The reason I specifically suggested it for poison is:
1) it has a simple workaround (use curse)
2) it's not a simple hazard (has a customizable timer, which is usable for puzzles - if you need a generic prot hazard you can use poison set to 1)
3) it's new (not too many people have incorporated it into worlds yet)
