Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Re: The Next Step - Making Everybody Edits Open Source

Hello

There were a few requests to merge things like a year ago now

So, the essential gist of this thread is "let's open-source EE so that we can as a community work on it" and so I merged a few. This is not a contemptuous merge, but a "hey cool ideas guys" so I mean there's that

also, I pick game discussion because it involves getting B&P community to help, but it would be a game suggestions change on the surface... but since it's not really a superficial game change it doesn't quite jive there either.

thanks

Sorry, I'm not going to quote anything because I'm on my phone and it takes ages

Firstly, EE has min 20 players (at least when I'm on) and a max of 120+

I would personally like EE to be open source, but there are a few problems to overcome first:
The community doesn't have many experienced developers, as most of the programmers are under 20 (including me), so haven't been a part of a bigger team developing anything more than small projects, this means hardly anyone will understand the development processes needed for open source to work
There are a lot of people who are at the stage where they are just starting, and writing code that works, but is terribly inefficient, which means the devs will have to either revert the changes, or spend lots of time fixing them
Legal issues get complicated with open source code, especially when large portions of the users identify as 'hackers', this means that either the work contributed by others would become property of EE, or portions of the code could be taken, and used for EE copies
The last issue is that either they could have to keep the servers closed source, or have people not only copying the client, but also the servers, which would mean there could be exact copies of the game

Sorry for the very delayed quote.

Once you get used to the following (in order)
- git (gitlab/github)
- rebase workflow
- merge requests
- test driven developement

And you have a number of established coding conventions, you're fine

Thank you @hummerz5!

Edit: If anybody would like to give an opinion on how to make the original post to have a higher impact I would appreciate.

yeah why not? i have waited for modifcations and addons ,plugins, editions, texture packs like minecraft, bots and more etc.
we need this to advanced and get more people, if we keep this game closed and locked up and not public, we wont get anywhere except very slow updates from devs like terraria, takes them 2 years to eve make a update, HOW stupid and dumb the terraria is, they don't have a team and they are not doing anything with it.

So my opinion on open source is this... the game is already dying...
If open source helps it... Great!
If open source kills it... Whatever, twas dead anyway...

We don't need news on something that won't happen. However, I applaud atilla if he actually managed to find a professional developer who would even set foot in this game. This has just become an endless cycle of terrible community/staff and bad game design. So there's really no other choices for this game other than to quit or ride along until its death.

Re: The Next Step - Making Everybody Edits Open Source

I lost my hope in EE a while ago by now.

There had been meanwhile to the last update on this topic some projects aiming to revamp EE from scratch, but they failed.
The programming community of EE also decreased. Their passion for this game vanished.

For the same reason I'm unable to continue sustaining this cause.

Probably fake or they turn off the deal. If someone would really had been interested into doing something, an official announcement would had been made by now.
