Foreign Languages in Chat

Panic, have you ever been in a room with another person having a conversation with them self in a foreign language? And I'm the stupid one?

And have you ever been in a room with 2 people having a conversation in a foreign language? Do you know what they're talking about? No, you don't. They could be talking about 9/11. They could be talking about how all Americans are idiots and don't know how to run the economy. Would you take offense to that?

Point is, it's rude to talk in a different language when the majority is speaking another, because you don't know what they're talking about. It's like passing notes right in front of you.

If you have even a basic grasp of other languages you can pretty much decode most.

Except russian and the arabic that you write online using numbers as letters... that just confuses me.

As for it offending you? It offends me that it offends you therefore it cancels out your opinion. (*is awesome at using tako logic*)

Well, most of the time i use portuguese if i'm talking to someone that is brazilian like me...

Oh crap. Me being lazy made me forget to put something in my other post. I meant if you kick someone for just talking with someone else. Sorry about that.
There are some people who don't know any English at all. What do you expect them to do? Most translators turn fluent foreign phrases into a mixed pile of words that make no sense.

The truth is, in the real world, you need to know a lot of languages to be able to speak to more than 50% of the world. Here is a list of the most-spoken languages in the world.

I think you saying that they're talking about 9/11 and terrorist attacks is a lot more offensive than them actually speaking another language. All I can say is you'll have to learn to deal with the fact most people don't speak English.

I would just like to point out that Tako is, at this point in his posting, not speaking for America as a whole, but rather for ten year olds, who think their world is the only one because they are incapable of thinking otherwise.

Apparently I've gone blind and stupid: what language is the game written in? Spanish?

And excuse me for not knowing 2 or 3 languages. I didn't know that was a requirement for using the internet.

So, to be clear, nobody here has a problem with a person speaking, say, Japanese in a chatroom.

(And bee, I think you missed my point entirely. My point was, you DON'T know what they're saying, they could be talking about ANYTHING.)

Nobody said you have to learn the languages. Just know that there is a ton of people out there who speak other languages.

Yes the game is written in English, but that shouldn't be cause for discrimination against other languages. I think anybody should speak in any language they want, even if some others don't understand. It's all about freedom of speech.

Kicking someone because they're speaking another language is hating on other languages. And as I've said, it may be an English website but I still believe players should be free to speak in whatever language they want without being discriminated against or kicked from worlds.

Nope, not really. I'd be annoyed if someone was trying to speak Japanese to me, but two people speaking Japanese to each other? I see nothing wrong with that.

Because it's an established discussion with a common topic. Chatting in-game doesn't follow the social conventions of set topic discussion.

Then that's where the problem lies. You need to realize that chatting and forums are two completely different forms of media. If you hadn't noticed, in-game chat rarely follows set topics. People talk about whatever they want.

In forums, the discussion needs to remain on topic with the OP. Anything else is derailing a thread and speaking in another language in a set discussion with everyone else speaking English is rude. Chatting is a lot more personal.

EDIT:
Example: Two people enter this thread and start talking about the weather, in English. Rude? Of course! This thread is not about the weather.
In-game. Two people enter and start talking about the weather. Rude? Of course not. They can talk about whatever they want.

Well, not rude, spam. Spam isn't really rude, it's annoying.

And in both cases I would find it "rude," because even though it's not written in stone, in a chat we talk about a topic. People can introduce new topics, that's fine. But if I'm in a chat room talking about politics, and two people come in talking about the weather, I would find that distracting and "rude", definitely.

Set up a Tinychat for structured chatting. How can you expect people playing a game to stay on-topic? EE is an open chat. Anyone can join. If you want to have a conversation, give the people you want a Tinychat link and carry on the discussion there.

Wait, why were you discussing nacho politics with Obama in EE? Anyway, so what? If Chimi and I want to talk about kites, who's to stop us? You don't own the chat sidebar. That's also why you'll see people address each other like this:

It's still distracting, adding more words won't solve it, really.

The right thing to do (Billy: IMO), would to ask what everyone's talking about, and if you want to join in do so. If you don't want to join in, keep your yap shut.
