Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

I was told that the only reason that we have cigarettes is that the government mooches off of the payment and spends it on their fatasses.
And unfortunately, people are stupid enough to keep buying. If there was no demand, it wouldn't sell and then it'd stop. But yea, the government makes huge cash on excise duty.

Sure, cigarettes might not be the smartest thing to go around smoking, and totally banning them likely would save a lot of lives. However, I'm asking why you get the right to tell me what to do when it concerns only me. If I want to smoke, who are you to stop me? Why does what you think triumph over what I think when it concerns only me?
Because your decisions not only effect you, but everyone around you. It does concern me.
Also, this isn't exactly an opinion, that smoking is bad for you. I'm sure I could dig up some article that says smoking is 100% bad with facts to prove itself, but I don't need to do that because you already know that it is.
Fact > What you think

He likes to mass debate. Sorry, had to say that
You know me too well.
I debate everything. It's one of my amazing qualities.[/sarcasm] Literally, I question anything there is to question.

Well of course. State taxes apply to cigarettes as well. Did you know that Marlboro is most valuable brand-name on the earth? That's a lot, A LOT, of money.
I'm not entirely sure they use that money to wipe their buttocks

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

I'm not denying that they're bad for you, and it's unimportant. What I'm asking is why you get to tell me what to do with my own body and what I want to put in it. Does me wanting to smoke effect everyone around me? Sure, if they're breathing in that smoke, but they can quite easily leave or I can just not smoke around them. You don't get to say it effects others because that just isn't necessarily true.
So, why do you get to tell me what to do when it concerns only me?

Because it's helping them.
We're trying to make a better society, not keep it the same because people are too stubborn to change.

Population, it's all about population, we have too much, it's just sick.
America is actually really underpopulated compared to many Europe and Asia.
Erm, why do you want to talk about the issues in society on a game forum that was aimed for kids? Just asking out of curiosity...
I don't know, some 12 year olds might like talking about that... maybe the ones in calculus...
But with cigarettes, maybe it would be better to make people get a special cigarette license to smoke, and make you do a lot of work to get it so that it stops people from smoking, but they still can if for some reason they really want to.

So what if it is helping them? Again, why do you get the right to tell me what to do with my own body? If I want to stand around for a while and breath in some smoke, who are you to tell me otherwise?

It's not ME saying otherwise, it's FACT saying otherwise.
I am relaying fact, that smoking is bad, and it needs to stop.

What? Read what I wrote. I'm aware that smoking is bad for you, but that's not what I'm asking.
I'm asking why you or anyone else gets to tell me what to do with my body. I don't care that it's bad for you.
Your freedom should stop where it infringes upon other people's freedom. Second hand smoke is bad for people, thus infringing on their natural right to live healthily.
If you smoke in your house, I don't care. If you smoke in my house, you should only be able to do it legally if I let you. And you should not be able to smoke on public property.

I wasn't talking just about America, but global. Soon we're bound to get there though.

The government can tell you what to do because they have authority over you. There, that answers your question.
Everyone is sheep, basically. The government is the shepherd, letting the sheep do whatever the heck they want. They not only deserve, but are expected, to protect their sheep. Not just from crimes inflicted by other people, which they already do, but crimes inflicted by themselves, like a sheep wondering off the side of a cliff. It is then and only then when they'd wish someone had stepped in and stopped them, or removed the cliff entirely.
They most certainly have the right to tell you what to do with your body, because you're stupid.
You = the general public
Not you personally.

So they have authority because they have authority. Thanks.

I did, but I don't really believe it.
You don't need to know 2+2 to be a hairdresser, in all honesty.
Sure, if you want to look like a massive tosser when it comes to giving a customer their change.

At first I was going to reply to the entire topic, but it's just so long, and I'm hungry.
4) Government
I don't know enough about government to pose a real argument, but from what I can tell they're doing a crappy job in America, probably because of this freedom we're so obsessed with. And, of course, not having education as a priority means you're raising a bunch of "not-as-smart-as-they-could-be" people which grow up to be, who? The people who run this country.
It's funny that you mention this, for I just learned an amazing little fact in school yesterday.
China has always had the highest suicide percentage of any nation. Do you know why? Well, at one point in history, it was customary for students to take the Chinese version of the SAT: a 72 hour test on everything they have ever learned, to be taken at the age of twenty. It was 72 hours straight, mind you. During this time, students weren't allowed to go to the bathroom. If they did, the test would be invalid, and they would never be allowed to take the test again. Many of these test takers died from their built up, poisonous bile.
This test was so crucial to the Chinese, for only the top few students (who passed) were given any kind of future in any career. The rest were screwed, and, thereby, compelled to commit suicide.
I like the American system more.

It involves symmetry. Symmetry is in Math.
They most certainly have the right to tell you what to do with your body, because you're stupid.
Disabled guy x is stupid, hence, I tell him to eat nothing but cheese because he's stupid and I'm not.
Really, my intelligence and that of others has little to do with it. It's my body regardless of how intelligent I am or the thing I want to do is.

The only reason I mind people poisoning themselves with random crap (if it doesn't harm anyone else in the first place) is that they cost money. They need to be helped back to health, sometimes get a house even, or have their deaths investigated and cleaned up, jail costs money too. I don't care if people want to rot in their own filth, as long as it doesn't cause harm in any kind of way to anyone else.
tl;dr: enjoy whatever, just leave other ppl out of it

Always. They don't always deal with money. This means that some hairdressers do, right? 'You don't need to know 2+2 to be a hairdresser, in all honesty.' is a pretty vague statement, to be honest.

Nice thread.
These subjects aren't the subjects that I'm most intrested in, so I shall come back and write a post tomorrow about poverty in the third world and how the first world abuses third world countries and developing countries with the principles of free trade, and how to prevent it.
I might also write a post about racial segregation.
Have in mind that I will only do it if your are interested in these subjects. I don't want to write a 500+ word post in vain.
Hmm.
But what's interesting is what comes after your 9th year. You choose (OMNIGOSH, YOU MAKE DECISIONS) an academic track or a vocational track. Too bad we can't provide those. They pretty much combine your vocation and your academics together. Academics more important than vocation, of course; yet another brilliant move by our amazing country.
It's not the government's choice, honestly. My school district DOES have a vocational school. It's called JVS. Joint Vocational School. It has several vocational tracks in one building, and about four districts share the school. The name was changed to CTC [Career technology Center], though. My father and my brother both went there. It's pretty dependent on your school, I think, not the government. Sure, as a whole, most districts don't have the opportunity, but that's not the government's fault.
I find it hilarious yet tragic how they think sometimes: guns are fine, but one female nipple in sight and all hell breaks loose.
Reminds me of a comic I once saw. ~
Also, with the cigarettes and obesity bit, it's their decision. If they want to be fat and get heart disease, so be it. If they want lung cancer, so be it. It's their life. Same with drugs.
Humanity, in my opinion, is going downhill and it has been. We have no morals or anything, it's quite pathetic. I hate it. I hate humanity. We're disgusting, filthy, and overall horrible. I'm a misanthrope, I guess.
There's so many things wrong, and no way of fixing them.
