Well, if you couldn't read you couldn't read this forums, you couldn't find websites, you couldn't read paper or books, you couldn't play games with text etc... there are so many applications for reading you read on a regular basis and you don't even know it. Reading books helps you get better at it. It's not a matter of being cocky, it's a matter of educating yourself. If you aren't educated than people of higher intellect will take advantage of you. (This is no to say you are dumb Fdoou.), but I don't see how reading necessarily makes you cocky.

Re: Books

I've read Lord of the Flies. I remember because I didn't used to think it was cool, until my teacher started jumping on desks and chanting tribally to give us a picture of what it was really like. After that I never thought it was lame again.

Re: Books

I'll tell you what I hate...
When you read a book, then the movie comes out soon after, and everyone raves about it, and they don't care if you've already read the book, and they are inviting you to watch the movie when you already know what's gonna happen, and then...
Yeah, just hate that
Cough cough Percy Jackson
Cough cough Life of Pi
Cough cough Hunger Games
Cough cough 2 upcoming movies (Legend series, monument 14)
*2 years later of coughing*

EDIT: Also, 3/4 of the way through WARP.
Definitely improved when they met the Combanini guy, or whatever, already forgot due to my bad memory...

Re: Books

I just realised Huckleberry Finn is a sequel to Tom Sawyer...
Oh well, I suppose I better finish Huck Finn and then I'll read Tom Sawyer. I don't think it'll matter too much because the events of Huck Finn don't seem to involve Tom Sawyer, except for at the beginning.

I read all those books before they were movies. The only one I didn't like was the Hunger Games. I know the Hunger games is supposed to be good, because Katniss is supposed to be a female role model, but even though she's a strong female protagonist, I can't say I necessarily like her just because I didn't like the series. It was a very cliche post apocalyptic setting, fight or die, corrupt mayor, etc... nothing really new IMO. And even though the whole idea of sending children off to battle may seem interesting, it's very much like the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, except with a love interest.

Life of Pi was by far the best, and Percy Jackson I just enjoy reading because Rick Riordan has such an entertaining writing style. I especially loved the end of the first series, I never saw it coming! ^__^'

EDIT: halfway done with Identity by Ted Dekker, I must say its very intriguing. Considering how it started I thought it would be like some feel good slice of life story, but so far I have been pleasantly surprised at how quickly it turned dark. As long as it continues with such vigor, I'll probably read the rest of the series as well.

Re: Books

I'm still in the middle of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and wow:

He did not go skipping and prancing, but moved with a dignified swagger,

I did not know the word "swagger" has been around since the 1800s...
I find these old books really interesting in that sense because you get an idea of what life was like back then.

omg yes. Its a really good read. I have to warn you though, the ending is kinda weird, im still not sure how I feel about it, and it references his previous books. But we can talk about the ending when you finish all three! //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile
If you like that, I really recommend his books Showdown, Sinner and Saint, (SO GOOD) and Emannuels (however you spell that) Veins.

Also, Im p sure he continued the Identity series in a book called Water Walker, which I haven't read yet, but am getting around to.

ALSO: Im rereading the Eragon books by Paolini. I read them when I was like ten, and enjoyed them, but (even though they take hella stuff from LOTR) Im finding them even more enjoyable now! If you haven't read them, I do recommend.

@Failgirl: If you like ted dekker, he collab'd with another author named Tosca Lee, and wrote Mortal (its a series) They're pretty good, especially the first one.
She also wrote a great book called Demon. Although this one is significantly more Christian based as it tells the story of a demon. Its set it modern day so its not weird and old, and it has a fantastic ending. If you can get past the theological talk, its a real thinker.

EDIT: I just thought of a lot more books.
Wicked--This one is great, even though it skips around a lot. I love the story, and I want to read the sequels.
Martyrs Song (ted dekker again)- This one is so good, and it really makes you think/THE FEELS>
A wrinkle in time/ other books--So good.
The Giver books---These are probably among my top five favorite books ever.
Rooms by James L Rubart--This is also Christian based, and is kinda philosophical and fast paced at the same time. Its really well written, do recommend.
The Invisible Wall--This is a memoir of Jewish boy growing up in WW1. It sounds boring, but its surprisingly great.
Inkheart/Inkdeath/others--By Funke, these are probably top three favorite ever.
Im sure ill think of more, but until then, I highly recommend all of these

Re: Books

I don't really read books... Most of what I read is either on my computer or I'm forced to read it in English...
Lord of the Flies (reading now)
To Kill A Mockingbird
HungerGames (only the first book)
Shipwrecked (series)
Love That Dog
And Fdoou is there anything you don't hate? Everything you post is so negative...

Re: Books

@Pyro: I read all of the Eragon books, and I was greatly disappointed. Paolinis writing seems long and tedious to read. I don't want to give away spoilers, but the ending was very predictable and there was nothing really unique about it. I wish Paolini had explored Murtaghs character more, (but you know I also have a bias toward villainous characters, I always find them much cooler than the heroes.) I've never been a huge fan of dungeons and dragons type literature though, they just all seem the same to me (Just like how I won't play Skyrim or WoW or any other medieval or steam punk questing RPG game, because they are based around similar systems which aren't different from each other at all, aside from the names of quests and characters.)
-
Also, a Wrinkle in Time? Really? I read that book and I hated it. The ending was just so abrupt. I suppose when I first read it though I wasn't familiar with existentialist or religious though, but even reminiscing I still don't think I completely enjoy it. I guess my main concern was just that it seemed selfish of me that Meg and her siblings only saved themselves and not the people of Camazotz. You can imagine, where in almost every childrens adventure story the hero always vanquishes the evil, it seemed bazaar to me that they did not vanquish the evil, but rather only saved themselves. To me, leaving behind the people of Camazotz was more evil than not, because while they will go on to live their happy lives, the people of Camazotz will continue to suffer, and even though they are consciously aware, they make no attempt to stop the evil because they know they as long as they have family and love they will always be ok.
That being said, I am aware that indirectly my actions everyday will lead to the deaths of others, for example while I have plenty to eat others in the world are starving, yet I do nothing to help those who are less fortunate. I suppose there is only so much one can do to help others, however it is in my opinion that as people we should do out best to help others no matter how short our futile life may be. It is impossible to stop all that we consider evil, naturally, yet it doesn't mean we shouldn't stop fighting it. Though Meg and her family most likely cannot stop IT, I do think they should've at least helped the victims of Camazots who, at least the common folk, were innocent and undeserving of the punishment of conformity.
-
I've not read Inkheart, I have however watched the film which I quite enjoyed. I also read a book by Funke a while ago, Dragonrider, and while I cannot recall the synopsis I do remember enjoying it.
-
I have not read the other books you have mentioned, though I shall look into it. Right now I'm reading between Wuthering Heights and Treasure Island. And to you I reccomend Chris Wooding, specifically Poison. Since you seem to like novels that make you think, I highly recommend Poison. It is my favorite young adult novel of all time, and perhaps it may not be the best novel by any means, but I highly enjoy it.

@Jawapa: Lord of the Flies is amazing. Let me know what you think of the pig head //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink. To Kill a Mockingbird is also amazing, though I will admit parts of it are rather dry, I found it to be very powerful.
