Can I just ask you a question. Not that I do, but what if I had some sort of disability or disease that made me incapable of "finding the truths, the evil, and the way forward to a better world." Is it still wrong of me to exist and live my life just being nice to others? The reason your banter irritates me to such an extent is because you speak as if everyone NEEDS to contribute to improving the human condition in some form or another otherwise their life is a wasted life.
I agree that some people need to have a lifestyle in which they sacrifice themselves to help others, but that lifestyle becomes pointless if no one one needs to be helped. Society needs helpless people to be helped in order to have people who can be able to perform this self sacrifice. If everyone was special no one would be special.

Except you don't have a disability that makes you incapable. Hell, my own mom has a pretty crippling disability, and she still lobbied for people's rights for well over a decade. Unless you are truly bed-ridden (which from the content of all your posts, it's clear that you aren't) is not an excuse for you to have such a negative attitude. When something happens to you that is out of your control and you are incapable of getting through yourself, don't act offended when you realize that no one is going to help you out or even cares about your situation.

I'm not sure why you said that, because I said before it is not my intention to destroy or demoralize the human condition. I have friends, I have family, and I have acquaintances who all care about me and I care about them. I do my best to be the best me I can be, and even if that doesn't improve the human condition, as long as I'm being good does it matter? If ever I was in a time of need I would have plenty of support from people I know

I realize I don't, and I was trying to change the discussion to ask about Treejoe's insistent self sacrificial life style. I just don't like the fact that he assumes his life style as superior to others. Besides you didn't even answer the question. Kudos to your mother, but to those who truly cannot do anything, who are bed-ridden as you say, tell me, does that make their life not worth living? I think everyone deserves to live their life their own way, regardless of whether or not it improves the human condition, with the exception of those who live for evil intent, which then they should be stopped. No one deserves to die, or be tortured, or told how to live. I'm not evil for not sacrificing myself for society.

You act like you show the most respect for the opinions and freedom for mankind, but your lack of will to progress anything besides your own needs is blatant disrespect for the value of mankind and for future generations to come.
People with attitudes like yours is the same reason why conspiracies grow and grow, because the scientific value and historical importance of events can be undermined to fuel other beliefs. Society is so detached from the true pursuit of knowledge and the idea of a functioning society that people can actually belief that space programs were fictional.

Treejoe4, please take a philosophy class. Stop avoiding the fact that you're not the only human in the world and your logic is not as unshakeable as you make it to be. No one will take you seriously when all you do is ostracize others who don't fit into your perfect world.

I don't need to take a college philosophy class to value science, education, human life and social progress, I can do that while listening to music on my bed, and I can do that for free.

If all the information you are getting is from books of the computer, which must be in part some truth because you claim you can do it while listening to music in your bed, then you are no better than I am. At least I consider multiple perspectives, you only consider your own.
I watched that speech from Goodwill Hunting. I know what you're saying, but the fact is no matter how many posts we make or time we sit debating philosophy which has been around for hundreds of years nothing is going to change. We are equally as stubborn on our values, and though it escapes me why I continue to argue knowing this is a practice in futility, I'm just going to agree that we disagree, because there is nothing else I can say that I haven't already said.

Even if you have no intention of not being nice to people, and that's all you do, there are technicalities in the law that could land you in prison for something out of your control or something you didn't even do. THAT is the type of world we are living in, failgirl.

Failgirl I did look it at from different perspectives, and I came to the conclusion that the cures for diseases, scientific progress, and many other important aspects of society don't come from people who to choose to care only about 3 things, their life, their families lives, and their friends lives.

Doctors can prolong life, scientists can create a utopian world, yet no matter our actions it doesn't change the fact that someday we will all die. As overused as the phrase is, you only live your life once. Instead of chasing an unobtainable goal I choose to worry about my own problems and not everyone else's. I also don't feel it's my duty to tell others how to live. Therefore I see no reason to sacrifice my own ideals for anyone else's.

I'd apologize but I'm really not sorry for being an individual. You can tell me how bad you think I am over and over but it doesn't change the fact that I'm right. Of course it's hard to accept the futility of life which is why we give it purpose. I will never criticize anyone who does something to help another being no matter how small, yet it doesn't make those kind actions and less futile. Treejoe4 can tell me over and over about his superior lifestyle, but in fact there is nothing any better about his lifestyle than my own. As Camus famously wrote "The only real question in life is suicide."

I'm not a nihilist, and I do take offense to that. Stating an idea and believing in an idea are two different things. This is why you take philosophy so you can understand the difference. Your unshakeable logic has failed you yet again. I'm not anti-society, I'm anti telling people how to live, because your ideas aren't always right and a perfect world will never exist. There will always be evil the world, and it can't be eradicated. Well, yes, the green skittles are a part of it. They have tiny transmitters that let the NSA narrow down only on people and not animals and large areas of nothing. But I outsmarted them, yes I did. I haven't eaten a green skittle in over 6 years.
