Some people find it easier to contact others using that list instead of typing their name into the "to" box, for private messaging at least.
As far as colors, it makes us different from other users. Would you like to get the fun, "I want to be a mod please make me one", messages that people send me?

I say we bring back the "Online Today". It was helpful to see when our friends were on. Though it made my MacBook lag like a mofo.
