yeah I mean my guess would be whatever code is used to render players... just be like "if solituding and player.isme or !solituding then draw player" but disclaimer: I haven't looked in the codes for like a year or two now.

Not really for lag, but with puzzle levels, you don't want the solution ruined because another person solves it. It ruins the fun of figuring it out for yourself. Also with minis it confuses many people when there are other people doing the same mini at the same time.
