No... not at all...

Maybe they should have made something to automatically delete item from shop when it reached desired date  instead of pushing an update just to delete those, but I guess they are adding that in Unitee

at this rate, Unity will bring the singularity

at the core of it all, they just have to make a meta field that holds the endpoint for when energy can be spent on the item. I mean sure updates make it look nice, but the simplest implementation is just to ignore the client when the server hears "let me spend energy on this old item"
