Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Calculator

I am going to work on a calculator using the same mechanics as this. I believe a calculator will be a better demonstration of these mechanics, because it does not require a guide and is easy for anyone to use. A lot of the features of a calculator have already been made in my level "The Arena", such as addition/subtraction, and a seven-segment display. With the knowledge I already have, making this calculator should be quite easy. I probably won't do division. But who knows, I might change my mind later.

Re: Calculator

Damn dude, good luck.  I gave up on a similar concept because I needed a lot of switches and IDs and wasn't sure I'd have enough to do all four functions using large numbers (and otherwise whats the point?).  Tamasazishu (sp?) is working on a 4-bit calculator that I don't understand at all, he said he'd add some demonstrations on the forum some time soon maybe.

I haven't actually chosen a world yet. I'm not sure how big it will have to be, but I think large world might be slightly too small, so a massive world would be the safest option. I'll give a link soon, but the world will be empty for now.

Thanks. While working on The Arena, I had to buy a LOT of switches. I have 700 now, lol. Looking at it now, there are some parts of the system where I could have done it more efficiently, but whatever. I think I'm gonna make it 7-bit or maybe 8-bit, so I can have multiplications for numbers 1 - 10, or 1 - 12. I don't think I'll run out of IDs.

If you get BC, just make sure you get it for long enough. When I made my rpg, my BC only lasted a month and I thought I could finish it. I was completely wrong. Mostly because switches with 100 IDs were released so I could expand the level greatly, with extra variables. But even the initial version with only 10 IDs wouldn't have been finished in time. You can try to do it without BC, but honestly it will take a really really long time to buy all the stuff. I don't know if you are willing to wait that long for it.

Re: Calculator

Bump. Done with addition/subtraction (this was actually done a while ago, and is quite easy because I already know how to do it after my experience with making The Arena) and I added a seven-segment display so you can actually understand what the answer is (this was the long, tedious part; see the bottom of the map and stuff connected to it). Next I'll be working on multiplication, and I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to do division. It's a possibility.

EDIT: I just realised... my seven-segment display will mean nothing in January 2016 when signs are infinite and I can just use a sign for each of the 128 possible values. Oh well //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

Go for options a lot higher than 128.

Just wanna say all your switch contraptions are insanely impressive, they'll never cease to amaze me. It's just a wonderful display of what's possible in this game. Can't wait for you to have unlimited switches //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile

Re: Calculator

I didn't give a link at first because there wasn't much to show, but I have posted a level link in the post where I bumped the topic. I'll put it in the first post too.

also @mihb, the way I'm checking the what the answer is takes up a lot of space. And every time I add another bit to the binary number, the size will double, and it becomes really difficult to fit into a world.

Re: Calculator

Make it so when you divide 0 by 0 you get kicked of the world with reason: 0 / 0 is indeterminate

Seriously, i think you also need bots for switches

That would require a lot of space for switches requiring extremely big worlds. As i said, you will need bots for switches

There's a reason this subforum is NOT called Bot and Programming. The whole idea of making these kind of devices is to be able to create autonomous levels without bot assistance.

I'm quite certain it is possible to make 4-function calculators that handle large numbers without using a bot.

On top of that, making a calculator with a bot would miss the point entirely.

if i remember correctly, theres a guy called mat12 that made a calculator bot, that was amazing

Re: Calculator

I finished multiplication. I don't think I'm gonna do division. I just think there's no point when the numbers you can use are so small. In the future, I might come back to calculators and do bigger numbers so I can do division as well. Also, there are much better ways to do what I've done (thanks atilla).

So, this project is complete for now. Going to post this in rooms now.

It contain XX numbers (8-bit) , but sadly there are only 2 operators
